Instead of writing on the library tables, which then need to be either scrubbed clean or replaced, both of which cost money, why not try out the Library whiteboards I’ve been testing?

Have you seen the state of some of the desks and tables in Riccarton Library?
I was saddened to see that so many of them have been vandalised. I took the following photos of tables on Level 4 only the other day.

And it’s not only those tables that have been damaged. Look at the following, taken in other parts of Riccarton Library:

There are so many tables that have been vandalised! It makes you wonder why. Even the new round tables which were bought only a couple of months ago are being defaced.

But, do you know what this means? It means that if we have to replace or repair tables because they’ve been vandalised, there’s less money available to buy books. It’s as simple as that.
Do you know how much it costs to replace 50 tables – £15,000 We could buy a lot of books for £15,000
Heriot-Watt University Library already has the lowest book spend per student of any UK university, so it’s not as if there’s any money to spare.

And at the end of the day, one way or another, it comes out of your pockets.
