Keeping up-to-date

5 May 2008

Last week, I mentioned that May 1st was RSS Awareness Day and that RSS can be a really useful tool for keeping up-to-date.

This week, I’d like to mention a few specific RSS feeds and lists of feeds which should be of interest.  A growing number of websites are offering RSS feeds, through which it’s possible to keep up-to-date with various kinds of things, as you can see from the list below.  This is only a selection of feeds, biased to science & engineering, and there are many more.  Our About RSS page gives more information on how to use these feeds, and in each issue of the Internet Resources Newsletter I highlight a few feeds in the Blogorama section.

Welcome - new Subject Librarian for MACS & engineering

14 April 2008

We are delighted to welcome Sarah Kelly, who joined us during the vacation. Sarah is our new Subject Librarian for the School of Mathematical & Computer Sciences, and also for Civil, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering.

Sarah will be providing an expert advisory service in these subjects to help you identify, locate and use information resources to support your learning, teaching and research - feel free to contact her at any time if you have a question. She is also available to give lectures, seminars etc. to groups of students or staff on any aspect of information services and resources in these subjects. She will be working with staff in these subjects to ensure that the Library is kept informed about, and purchases the books, journals and other resources needed to support the academic work in those subjects. Along with the other Subject Librarians, Sarah will also be providing our general Enquiry Service and delivering general induction sessions to new students at the beginning of the academic year. If you’re studying, researching or teaching in any of Sarah’s subjects, why not get in touch and see how Sarah can help. Contact her at S.Kelly@hw.ac.uk or by phone on 3574.

New resources help engineers

3 March 2008

New resources help engineers - this is an article I wrote for the Feb/Mar issue of Research Information. It’s essentially a roundup of developments in the engineering publishing world over the past year.  It features updates about developments, new journals, federated search tools, Open Access and more, from publishers such as Elsevier, GlobalSpec, Emerald, IEEE, Sage, etc.

Other items in this issue of Research Information include Academics back peer review but want improvementsReport shows JPEG 2000 is a great step forward and Subject repositories top ranking.

Chemistry articles come alive

29 February 2008

The Royal Society of Chemistry is working on a project to enhance the content of their journal articles.  Project Prospect allows you to highlight IUPAC Gold Book terms in the text and view the Gold Book entries. You can also highlight compounds and view synonyms, SMILES and InCHI data, structure diagrams and details of other RSC articles mentioning the same compound.

This icon indicates articles offering these enhanced features -

Have a look at some of the features available by opening up a sample article (choose Prospect View) and listen to someone from the Royal Society of Chemistry guide you through it.

Find out more about Project Prospect on the RSC website.  Access to the fulltext of all RSC journals (1841- ) is available from the library website.
