New search engine from Microsoft – Bing

bing
Microsoft recently made available a new search engine called Bing.  It’s been getting mixed reports in the media.  Two of the sources I rely on for expert and impartial reviews of search engines were not very positive at all.  Phil Bradley reported: It’s awful, and Karen Blakeman said: Don’t bother.  Elsewhere, some reviews have been more positive.

About.com has a helpful screenshot walk-through, which is a useful way of getting an overview.

  1. Phil Bradley Says:

I’ve also discovered that Bing is removing (aka censoring?) results in the UK version of the engine as well. Details at http://tinyurl.com/ne2p57 which is my blog post about it. All very odd and I don’t pretend to understand it.

See also Karen Blakeman’s blog for a report on the recent Bing UK Round Table Meeting http://www.rba.co.uk/wordpress/2009/07/10/bing-uk-round-table-meeting/ and Phil Bradley’s report on the same meeting http://philbradley.typepad.com/phil_bradleys_weblog/2009/06/the-microsoft-bing-meeting.html

Yeah, I must admit, I am very skeptical of what bing may be doing, and I honestly believe it still won’t come close to competing with Google..

  5. Voice Broadcasting Says:

I think Bing has a chance of being successful as long as they emulate Google as much as possible. Why reinvent the wheel?

  6. Phil Bradley Says:

If Bing emulate Google, why would people want to leave Google? The only way that Bing can compete is to innovate and provide a different experience.

  7. Roddy MacLeod Says:

Bing now refers a lot more users than Google does to one of the sites I administer, but th eopposite is the case with another site.
