VISION courses for semesterisation – OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

26 June 2008

If you’re redesigning a VISION course for semesterisation, here’s a great opportunity - adding key reading materials (by adding links or scans).

Make your VISION courses more interactive, attractive and supportive.   Add an extra dimension to your course  – at little opportunity cost.  Spend a few minutes adding some links or ask your Subject Librarian to lend a hand and that’s it!   Your students get online course notes and reading materials  -  together on the same plate!  Have a look at the kinds of materials you can link to.

Not sure what to do next?  Contact libscan@hw.ac.uk for information on how to get a scanned document in VISION or M.L.Kennedy@hw.ac.uk for information on linking.

Lost and in need of direction? Ask Miss Dewey

20 June 2008

Have a look at one of my favourite YouTube videos starring Stanely Unwin, the master of talking rubbish very convincingly . . . .

This clip makes me laugh but it also taps in to some deep rooted frustration.  I really don’t like it when I can’t get the information I need!

Do you ever get that?  Maybe you find navigating electronic journals a bit mind boggling?

“Why can I see this article but not that one – they’re from the same journal? AARGH!?”

“Why am I being asked to pay for this article?” We subscribe to this – don’t we???”

“I don’t believe it! I’m getting a message saying I’ not authorised even when I’ve logged in.”

If you’re unsure, don’t ask Heriot Watt’s answer to Stanely Unwin - ask one of the library staff!  Emailchat or call (451-3582) and make finding the information you need less confusing.

Trust me. I’m Miss Dewey.

Enjoy the summer – we’re still open

20 June 2008

vacation
The Library staff hope you enjoy the Summer Vacation.

We’ll be open on our Summer Vacation schedule from Saturday 21 June – Sunday 14 September.

Riccarton Library will be closed for stocktaking Monday 14 July – Thursday 17 July.

We’ll be busy throughout the vacation.

As well as our normal activities – buying books for next year, stocktaking and checking all the existing books, helping students working on dissertations and other research through the summer – we’ll be making some changes. In Riccarton Library, we’ll be re-arranging some of the shelves on level 2 and working with Catering to install our new cafe. We’ll also be buying some new furniture for Levels 2 & 4 to give you better facilities for group working and discussion. In Galashiels, we’ll be finalising the detailed plans for the refurbished Martindale Library and working with our colleagues at Borders College to plan the combined service which we’ll be offering from summer 2009.

Of course, we will also be taking our holidays, so it won’t all be hard work!

We look forward to seeing you in September.

Global scientific information search service expands its coverage

18 June 2008

I mentioned the WorldWideScience.org service in a previous post on this blog, nearly a year ago.  Since then, it has been considerably expanded.

WorldWideScience is a “global science gateway” - what this means is that you can search 32 national scientific databases and portals from 44 countries at the same time.  What you are actually searching is more than 200 million pages of science and technology information not typically accessible through popular search engines.  When it first launched, the portal linked to 12 databases from 10 countries, so there has been quite an increase in coverage.

Many, but not all, of the references retrieved are freely available.

There’s a short, helpful article about WorldWideScience.org at ReadWriteWeb.

WorldWideScience.org is maintained by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Scientific and Technical Information

For more databases available to members of Heriot Watt University, see our Databases and other electronic resources list.
